The story

Sailfest in New London

Sailfest is a free, two-day summer festival held each July along the New London, Connecticut waterfront, centered on Waterfront Park and the city's harbor. The event draws visiting tall ships and Coast Guard vessels, more than two hundred food and craft vendors lining downtown streets, amusement rides, live music stages, and a Saturday-night fireworks display that has made it one of southeastern Connecticut's largest summer gatherings.

New London built its early economy on deep water: a natural harbor that made it one of the busiest whaling ports in nineteenth-century America and later home to the U.S.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Sailfest's defining feature is its setting on one of Connecticut's few deep-water harbors, letting the festival host visiting tall ships and other large vessels that smaller coastal towns cannot accommodate, alongside the fireworks show fired over open water rather than a landlocked field

02

The mystery stays covered

Because New London's waterfront park and adjoining downtown streets can absorb more than two hundred vendors, the festival scales up well past a typical small-town summer fair, adding amusement rides and multiple free live-music stages on top of the food and craft rows

03

The city starts moving

Free admission keeps the event accessible even as it has grown into the region's largest summer draw, with the fireworks display alone pulling crowds from well outside New London
