Southern Decadence is an annual five-day LGBTQ event held in New Orleans, Louisiana, over Labor Day weekend, tracing its origins to a 1972 end-of-summer party among a small group of friends. In August 1972, a group of roughly forty to fifty friends in New Orleans, gay and straight alike, decided to throw an end-of-summer party with a theatrical twist: guests were asked to come as their favorite decadent Southerner, and the gathering was billed, with tongue firmly in cheek, as Southern Decadence Party.
