The story

Tribeca Festival in New York

The Tribeca Festival is an annual multi-disciplinary festival held each spring in New York City, founded in 2002 by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff to help revitalize Lower Manhattan after the September 11 attacks. Originally called the Tribeca Film Festival, it dropped Film from its name in 2021 to reflect programming that now spans film, television, music, games, art, and immersive media.

The Tribeca Festival was founded in 2002 by actor Robert De Niro, producer Jane Rosenthal, and entrepreneur Craig Hatkoff, in direct response to the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, which had devastated the Tribeca neighborhood of Lower Manhattan where De Niro and Rosenthal both lived and worked.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Tribeca was created in direct response to the September 11, 2001 attacks, launched after just 120 days of planning and more than 1,300 volunteers, opening on May 8, 2002 with About a Boy and drawing over 150,000 attendees in its first year

02

The mystery stays covered

Its founders' urban-revitalization mission was distinct from older, more Eurocentric prestige festivals

03

The city starts moving

the inaugural edition included a Martin Scorsese-curated Best of New York series and a family street fair that alone drew an estimated 250,000 people by 2003

04

The water draws everyone in

In 2021, the festival dropped Film from its name and added a dedicated video games competition, the Tribeca Games Award, reflecting an unusually broad scope that today spans film, television episodes, music, immersive art, and talks across roughly 600 screenings and events each year
