The story

Ocean City Doo Dah Parade in Ocean City

Ocean City, New Jersey's Doo Dah Parade is a comedic spring procession modeled on Pasadena's original tax-season spoof parade, first held on the Jersey Shore in 1986. Marching Philadelphia-style string bands share Asbury Avenue and the Boardwalk with hundreds of basset hounds brought out by the Tri-State Bassett Hound Rescue League, plus costumed locals and mock dignitaries poking fun at more formal civic parades.

Ocean City, New Jersey held its first Doo Dah Parade on April 19, 1986, borrowing its name and irreverent spirit from the original Doo Dah Parade that Pasadena, California residents started decades earlier as a tongue-in-cheek answer to the polished Tournament of Roses Parade.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The parade's signature sight is its basset hound contingent: several hundred low-slung dogs, organized by the Tri-State Bassett Hound Rescue League, walk or ride in wagons and strollers along the route, ears nearly touching the pavement, drawing as much attention as any float

02

The mystery stays covered

Musical color comes from Philadelphia-tradition string bands, including the Hobo Band and the Kensington, Jersey and Woodland string bands, playing banjo-and-glockenspiel arrangements normally associated with Philadelphia's Mummers parade

03

The city starts moving

Because the event is deliberately unserious, homemade costumes and satirical signage mocking tax season or current events are common, and locally selected mock royalty rides alongside the genuine floats without anyone taking the titles too seriously
