Red Earth Festival in Oklahoma City
The Red Earth Festival is a Native American cultural festival held each June in Oklahoma City, organized by the nonprofit Red Earth Inc. It features juried Native American art competitions, traditional dance exhibitions and competitions, and cultural demonstrations celebrating tribal heritage from across North America.
Oklahoma's very name derives from Choctaw words meaning red people, a linguistic root that reflects the state's unusual and often painful history as a forced destination for dozens of Native American nations relocated from across the eastern United States during the nineteenth century.
