The story

Santa Lucia Festival in Omaha

Omaha's Santa Lucia Festival is a four-day Italian-American Catholic celebration rooted in the Sicilian city of Carlentini, founded in 1925 by immigrant Grazia Bonafede Caniglia. Held each June near Pierce Street, the festival combines homemade Italian food, live music, and games with a Sunday procession honoring Saint Lucy, drawing generations of Omaha's Italian-American families back to the neighborhood.

In 1900, a young mother named Grazia Bonafede Caniglia left Carlentini, a town in Sicily, and settled in Omaha.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The Santa Lucia Festival is one of the oldest ethnic religious festivals in Nebraska, unbroken since Grazia Bonafede Caniglia organized it in 1925 to keep Carlentini's own Santa Lucia traditions alive among Sicilian immigrants far from home

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival stays centered on faith rather than spectacle: a Festival Mass, a procession carrying the statue of Saint Lucy through the surrounding streets, the coronation of a festival Queen, and a closing Benediction anchor the weekend

03

The city starts moving

Around that religious core, an entirely homemade Italian menu, cooked by parish families using recipes passed down for a century, gives visitors an intimate, unfiltered taste of Omaha's Sicilian-American heritage rather than a generic Italian street fair experience
