The story

Rose Parade in Pasadena

Every New Year's morning, Pasadena's Colorado Boulevard fills with flower-covered floats, marching bands, and equestrian units for the Rose Parade, staged by the nonprofit Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association since January 1, 1890. The parade precedes the Rose Bowl college football game each afternoon, together forming one of the oldest continuously held New Year traditions in the United States.

On January 1, 1890, members of Pasadena's Valley Hunt Club decorated their carriages with flowers and paraded them down a dirt road, an event conceived partly to advertise Southern California's mild winters to relatives and friends shivering through snow back east.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Every float in the parade must be entirely covered in flowers, seeds, or other natural plant material, a strict rule that turns each entry into a labor-intensive floral sculpture built over months by volunteer crews

02

The mystery stays covered

First staged in 1890 by members of Pasadena's Valley Hunt Club to showcase California's mild winter climate to snowbound easterners, the parade has run uninterrupted except during three World War II years and the 2021 pandemic, an unbroken record spanning more than a century

03

The city starts moving

The Rose Bowl football game, now a major college bowl game, was added in 1902 specifically to help cover the parade's costs, linking a flower parade permanently to college football
