The story

Mainsail Art Festival in St. Petersburg

Mainsail Art Festival is a free, juried fine art show held each spring in Vinoy Park on St. Petersburg's waterfront. Founded in 1976 as a Bicentennial-year sidewalk arts festival, it now draws hundreds of juried painters, sculptors, and jewelers judged for cash awards topping ten thousand dollars, alongside live music, culinary vendors, and a juried K-12 student art exhibition called Young at Art.

Its waterfront park setting and art quality make it a strong Tampa Bay arts row.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets Mainsail apart is its unbroken nautical identity: named for a sailboat's mainsail in 1977, the festival still carries a hoisted-sail motif and a bright pink flamingo emblem adopted in 1986, both stamped on posters and signage that collectors have followed for nearly five decades

02

The mystery stays covered

Unlike many street fairs, Mainsail is run entirely by volunteers as a nonprofit, with no paid staff, and its jury has earned it a spot among Sunshine Artist magazine's ranked Top Fine Art and Design Shows nationally

03

The city starts moving

The festival channels artist camaraderie through traditions like a Sunday morning breakfast awards ceremony and Purchase Awards, where local sponsors buy juried pieces outright, giving exhibitors both prize money and an on-the-spot sale before the public even arrives
