The story

Blobfest in Phoenixville

Blobfest is a three-day summer festival in downtown Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, celebrating the 1958 cult horror film The Blob, portions of which were filmed at the borough's Colonial Theatre. Started in 2000 by the theatre, the event mixes horror-movie screenings with a street fair, costume and film contests, and a signature reenactment of the film's famous theater-emptying scene.

Its movie-location identity and reenactment make it an excellent weird film row.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Blobfest's defining feature is its site-specific authenticity: the Colonial Theatre itself appears in The Blob's pivotal projection-room scene, commemorated today with a plaque on the balcony wall, and the festival's signature Run-Out has fans sprint screaming out of the same theater doors the film's cast fled decades ago

02

The mystery stays covered

Beyond the screenings, the weekend layers in original programming built around the movie's campy legacy, including a costume contest, a facade-decorating contest for downtown businesses, a themed 5K run, and Shorty's Short Film Contest, named for the film's original working title

03

The city starts moving

The event has become a rallying point for Phoenixville's downtown revival, with proceeds supporting the nonprofit that operates the historic Colonial Theatre year-round
