The story

Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend

Each September, Port Townsend, Washington's Point Hudson marina fills with hundreds of wooden vessels, from tiny rowboats to tall ships, for the Wooden Boat Festival, launched in 1977 as the first American gathering of its kind. Hosted by the Northwest Maritime Center, the three-day event pairs boat displays with hands-on skill demonstrations, sailing excursions, and a working shipyard atmosphere celebrating traditional wooden boatbuilding craft.

Port Townsend built its Victorian-era prosperity on shipping and shipbuilding, then spent much of the twentieth century as a quiet mill town largely bypassed by modern boatyards.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets this festival apart is its working, not static, character: builders plane, caulk and rig boats on site, and visitors can book short sails aboard historic vessels like the schooner Adventuress rather than just view them roped off

02

The mystery stays covered

Founded in 1977 by Sam Connor and Mary Kearn, it sparked a national revival of interest in wooden boatbuilding and led directly to the founding of the Wooden Boat Foundation the following year

03

The city starts moving

Events like the Quick and Daring boatbuilding contest, where teams race to construct a seaworthy craft in hours, capture the hands-on ethos that separates Port Townsend from festivals that simply display boats as static exhibits
