Portland Greek Festival in Portland
Each October, the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in northeast Portland opens its grounds for a three-day festival of Greek food, folk dance, and faith. What began in the 1950s as a fundraising bazaar to help pay off the parish's new mortgage has grown into one of the largest Greek festivals in the western United States, drawing more than 15,000 guests to sample pastries, watch costumed dance troupes, and tour the cathedral itself.
The Portland Greek Festival did not start as a festival at all.
