Market Square Day in Portsmouth
Market Square Day has marked the unofficial start of summer in downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire since 1977, when it began to celebrate the renovation and beautification of Market Square. Held each June, the free festival draws an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 visitors for more than 150 vendors, regional artists, music, dance, and a 10K road race through the pedestrian-friendly downtown.
In 1977, downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire had just completed a renovation and beautification project centered on its historic Market Square, and city boosters wanted a way to mark the occasion.
