The Riverside Dickens Festival began in 1992 when Carolyn Grant and Joan Patton convinced the Friends of the Riverside Public Library to back a Victorian literary festival for the city, later moving it to February to mark Charles Dickens' February 7, 1812 birthday. Staged annually at downtown Riverside's historic White Park, the festival pairs costumed street performances and panel discussions with a themed focus on a different Dickens novel each year.
