The story

Battle of Flowers Parade in San Antonio

The Battle of Flowers Parade is the oldest event of Fiesta San Antonio, held on the second Friday of the festival each April in San Antonio, Texas. Begun in 1891 when local women decorated carriages, buggies, and bicycles with flowers and threw blossoms at one another, it is the only major parade in the United States conceived and produced entirely by women, drawing crowds estimated at more than 350,000 along its downtown route.

Its age and scale give it independent page value within the Fiesta ecosystem.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The parade's distinction is its origin: it began in 1891 as a flower fight among San Antonio women marking the Battle of San Jacinto anniversary, and more than a century later it remains organized and run entirely by women volunteers, assisted on parade day by the Texas Army National Guard

02

The mystery stays covered

The women who direct the parade traditionally wear yellow dresses and hats, a visual signature recognizable downtown each April

03

The city starts moving

Several area school districts treat the day as a local holiday and cancel classes

04

The water draws everyone in

As Fiesta San Antonio's founding event, predating the rest of the festival, it anchors commemorations of the Battle of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto, the 1836 battles that led to Texas independence
