Chicano Park Day in San Diego
Chicano Park Day commemorates the April 1970 founding of Chicano Park, when the Barrio Logan community claimed the land beneath the San Diego-Coronado Bridge for itself. The murals covering the bridge's support columns remain the centerpiece of the celebration, and the day unfolds through open community presence in the park rather than behind gates or inside a hall.
You walk into Chicano Park with the freeway humming overhead and the murals doing the opposite of fading into the background: they pull your eyes up, out, and all around.
