Founded in 1979 by a group of Bay Area artists including percussionists Marcus Gordon and John Santos and dancer Adela Chu, it now runs its Grand Parade through Calle 24.

In 1979, a small circle of Bay Area artists, percussionists Marcus Gordon and John Santos, dancer Adela Chu, activist Sir Lawrence, and costume designer Pam Minor, gathered at San Francisco's Precita Park with an idea: bring the spirit of Caribbean and Latin American carnival to the city's Mission District, a neighborhood already home to Central American, Mexican, and Caribbean immigrant communities.
