The story

Santa Fe Fiesta in Santa Fe

Fiestas de Santa Fe is a week-long community celebration held in September, one of the oldest continuously observed community festivals in the United States, dating to a 1712 proclamation commemorating the 1692 Spanish reconquest of the city. Modern Fiesta blends Novena masses and religious processions with a Historical Hysterical Parade, a Children's Pet Parade, mariachi music, and Plaza arts and food booths, and is traditionally launched by the Kiwanis Club's burning of Zozobra.

Fiestas de Santa Fe claims a history longer than nearly any other community celebration in the United States, tracing to a proclamation signed on September 16, 1712, declaring an annual observance of the 1692 reoccupation of Santa Fe by Spanish colonists under Don Diego de Vargas.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Fiesta's origins reach back further than almost any civic celebration in the country: the first Fiesta council proclaimed the observance on September 16, 1712, marking Don Diego de Vargas leading colonists back into Santa Fe in 1692 after twelve years of exile following the Pueblo Revolt of 1680

02

The mystery stays covered

The event was reshaped in 1912 by the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce and Edgar Lee Hewett into a broader celebration of regional history, and it gave rise to two events now recognized on their own: Traditional Spanish Market, spun off from Fiesta art sales in 1925-1932, and Zozobra, begun as part of a 1926 protest before folding into Fiesta programming

03

The city starts moving

In 2018, after years of protest over its framing, organizers dropped the Entrada, a reenactment of the reconquest, from the program
