The story

Santa Fe Indian Market in Santa Fe

The Santa Fe Indian Market is an outdoor art market held on and around the Santa Fe Plaza the weekend following the third Thursday in August. Organized by the nonprofit Southwestern Association for Indian Arts, it is the oldest and largest juried Native American art show in the country, drawing roughly 150,000 visitors who come to meet and buy directly from about 1,000 juried Native American and First Nations artists representing tribes across the United States and Canada.

Long before Santa Fe Indian Market became the largest juried Native art show in the world, it began in 1922 as a modest juried fair tucked inside the city's National Guard Armory.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The market traces to 1922, when the Museum of New Mexico staged a Southwest Indian Fair inside the National Guard Armory as part of Fiesta de Santa Fe, with art advocate Rose Dougan pushing for a competitive Native art fair

02

The mystery stays covered

The New Mexico Association on Indian Affairs took it over in 1936, and today SWAIA runs it as an independently juried show where every artist must prove enrollment in a federally recognized tribe and meet strict standards for authentic materials and craftsmanship
