The story

Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts in State College

Known locally as Arts Fest, the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts is a five-day juried arts festival held each summer across downtown State College and the adjacent Penn State University Park campus. First held in 1967 and opened by a sitting Pennsylvania governor, it now draws hundreds of visual and performing artists to its professionally juried Sidewalk Sale and Exhibition each July.

Its scale and Penn State town setting make it a core central PA arts event.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Arts Fest's staying power comes from its town-and-gown governance: half its board must be affiliated with Penn State and half must represent the surrounding State College community, a structure baked in since the beginning

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival began informally in 1967, when unjuried artwork was hung on snow fence along the Old Main lawn and patrons could reportedly even buy kittens

03

The city starts moving

it has since professionalized into a juried Sidewalk Sale and Exhibition ranked among the nation's top outdoor fine art and craft shows, drawing more than three hundred exhibitors working in ceramics, fiber, glass, jewelry, painting, photography, and wearable art

04

The water draws everyone in

Roughly 400 volunteers keep the five-day event running each year, reflecting its identity as a genuinely community-built festival rather than a commercially produced one
