Telluride Film Festival in Telluride

The Telluride Film Festival is a prestigious film showcase held every Labor Day weekend in Telluride, Colorado, first staged in August 1974 at the Sheridan Opera House. Founded by Bill and Stella Pence, Tom Luddy, and James Card, and operated by the National Film Preserve, it reaches its 53rd edition in 2026.

In August 1974, a small group of film enthusiasts, Bill and Stella Pence, Tom Luddy, and James Card of the Eastman-Kodak Film Preserve, staged a film festival in the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, a former mining town turned ski destination tucked into a box canyon in southwestern Colorado.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's informal insistence that films screen for the first time in North America has made it a genuine discovery ground for major cinema, hosting American or North American premieres of works including My Dinner with Andre, Blue Velvet, The Crying Game, Mulholland Drive, Brokeback Mountain, Moonlight, and Lady Bird, and giving early platforms to filmmakers like Michael Moore, whose debut Roger and Me premiered there in 1989, and Robert Rodriguez, whose first feature El Mariachi screened there in 1992

02

The mystery stays covered

Positioned on the festival calendar just after Cannes and immediately before Toronto and New York, Telluride has become an early bellwether for awards-season contenders despite operating in a small mountain town rather than a major media capital, and since 1995 it has awarded a special medallion to a non-filmmaker who has significantly shaped American or international film culture
