The story

Arizona International Film Festival in Tucson

The Arizona International Film Festival is the oldest continuously running independent film festival in Arizona, launched in November 1990 at Tucson's historic Temple of Music and Art. Now held each spring, the festival screens independent features, documentaries, and shorts from around the world, alongside the juried Reel Frontier Film and Video Competition. Since its founding, it has shown more than 3,500 films from roughly 100 countries to well over 185,000 Arizona audience members.

In November 1990, a four-day film program opened inside Tucson's newly restored Temple of Music and Art, screening surrealist animation alongside a live-scored presentation of the 1927 silent classic Wings.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What distinguishes the Arizona International Film Festival is its multi-decade commitment to independent voices outside the studio system, paired with deep local roots in downtown Tucson's historic Temple of Music and Art

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival built its identity through steady expansion rather than sudden scale: from a four-day 1990 debut it grew into a ten-day spring program, added the juried Reel Frontier Film and Video Competition for emerging filmmakers in 1998, and established the Festival in the Schools program in 1999 to bring independent film education directly into Tucson-area classrooms

03

The city starts moving

That education mission still separates it from festivals built purely around premieres, since programmers weigh a film's usefulness for student audiences alongside its artistic merit when building the schedule
