The story

Tucson Meet Yourself in Tucson

Tucson Meet Yourself is a folklife festival founded in 1974 by University of Arizona anthropologist James Big Jim Griffith to celebrate the living traditions of Tucson and the borderlands. Held every October in downtown Tucson, it draws around 120,000 visitors to sample food from more than 30 countries and regions, watch traditional performances, and meet the community and ethnic clubs that keep those customs alive.

In the 1960s, Tucson's urban renewal project bulldozed large sections of the city's historic barrio, displacing longtime residents and scattering the community networks that had sustained the neighborhood's traditions for generations.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Tucson Meet Yourself grew out of a specific historical wound: Tucson's 1960s urban renewal project demolished much of the city's historic barrio, scattering communities whose traditions risked being lost

02

The mystery stays covered

Folklorist James Griffith and his wife Loma founded the festival in 1974 as an act of cultural preservation, treating everyday traditions, especially food, as living folklore rather than nostalgia

03

The city starts moving

That origin still shapes the event: food booths are staffed by members of local ethnic and cultural clubs rather than commercial vendors, and dishes are presented as expressions of identity and history, not just menu items
