The story

Capital Pride Festival in Washington

Capital Pride Festival is Washington, D.C.'s major annual LGBTQ pride celebration, held each June and tracing its roots to a single block party organized in 1975 by bookstore owner Deacon Maccubbin. Today it combines a large parade through the Dupont Circle and Logan Circle area with a street festival on Pennsylvania Avenue, drawing crowds that have topped 200,000 in past years, organized since 2009 by the nonprofit Capital Pride Alliance.

In June 1975, a Washington bookstore owner named Deacon Maccubbin organized what he intended as a modest neighborhood gathering: a one-day block party on a single stretch of 20th Street NW, funded in part by two vending trucks selling beer and soft drinks.
