The story

DC State Fair in Washington

DC State Fair is a volunteer-run homage to the American state fair, reinvented for a city that is not a state. Founded in 2010 by three food and garden bloggers, it stages juried contests in baking, preserving, gardening, and homebrewing each year at a rotating Washington DC venue, most recently in the Downtown BID district.

In August 2010, three bloggers who wrote about food and gardening in Washington DC noticed a gap: every US state holds a state fair, but the District of Columbia, with no farmland, no county extension service, and no statehood, has never had one.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The fair's charm is its inversion of expectations: a jurisdiction with no farmland or state agricultural extension office still fields serious competitions for best tomato, best backyard egg, and best jar of honey, alongside categories that could only exist in the district, like Best Mumbo Sauce, the sweet-tangy condiment associated with DC and Prince George's County carryouts

02

The mystery stays covered

Homebrewers compete across hoppy, malty, roasty, and fruity categories, bakers face off in sourdough and biscuit rounds, and there are pie-eating contests for both adults and children

03

The city starts moving

Because the venue changes almost every year, from Barracks Row to a St

04

The water draws everyone in

Elizabeths campus green to a downtown plaza, the fair also doubles as an informal tour of DC neighborhoods
