The story

EU Open House in Washington

EU Open House brings together roughly twenty European Union member-state embassies along Washington DC's Embassy Row for a single free day of public visits each spring. Organized by the Delegation of the European Union to the United States, the event lands on the Saturday after Europe Day, marking the 1950 Schuman Declaration that began European integration, and opens normally closed diplomatic residences to visitors of all ages.

Washington's Embassy Row rarely opens its doors.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets EU Open House apart is scale and access: in one afternoon, visitors can walk through roughly twenty working embassies and ambassadorial residences that are otherwise closed to the public, each running its own independent program

02

The mystery stays covered

Austria pours apple strudel, Finland brings out Moomin characters, Ukraine hosts a bandura performance and a restaurant-led food workshop, and Estonia opens a building that is more than a century old

03

The city starts moving

Ireland stages traditional dance and Gaelic games, Hungary shows off Vizsla and Puli dogs, and Slovenia's Kurenti carnival figures pose for photos

04

The water draws everyone in

The result is a single-day tour through twenty distinct national cultures inside the same few blocks of the city
