The story

Turkish Festival DC in Washington

The Turkish Festival transforms Pennsylvania Avenue NW into a one-day showcase of Turkish culture each fall, organized by the American Turkish Association of Washington DC. Now more than two decades old, it draws over 20,000 visitors for Turkish cuisine, folk dance performances, hand-woven carpets, and traditional Turkish coffee fortune-telling.

The American Turkish Association of Washington DC, known as ATA-DC, was founded in 1965 to support and represent the Turkish-American community in the capital region, long before it began organizing the outdoor festival now associated with its name.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's centerpiece traditions go beyond typical food-and-music programming: a Turkish coffeehouse area serves coffee brewed the traditional way and pairs it with fortune-telling read from the coffee grounds left in the cup, a practice rooted in Ottoman-era social custom

02

The mystery stays covered

Folk dance workshops teach regional styles such as Roman and Artvin Horon dances, led by instructors trained at Turkish state conservatories, while vendor rows sell hand-woven Turkish carpets alongside festival food

03

The city starts moving

Organized by ATA-DC, a Turkish-American nonprofit founded in 1965, the festival has grown into one of the largest single-day ethnic cultural festivals on Pennsylvania Avenue, drawing more than 20,000 attendees to its most recent edition
