The story

National Cattle Congress Fair in Waterloo

National Cattle Congress Fair is a historic agricultural fair at the National Cattle Congress fairgrounds in Waterloo, founded in 1910 and reaching its 116th annual edition in 2026. Despite surviving a 1993 bankruptcy and the 1996 closure of an on-site greyhound track, the fair continues each late September with livestock competitions, PRCA rodeos, and a full carnival midway.

National Cattle Congress Fair traces its origin to 1910, when what began as an Iowa State Dairy Association cow exhibition, first held in Cedar Rapids in 1909, relocated to Waterloo's Chautauqua Park and drew 62 cows and more than 5,000 attendees to its first Waterloo edition.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few American county-style fairs have survived what this one has: the National Cattle Congress filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 1993, canceled its 1994 fair outright, and shut down an on-site greyhound racetrack in 1996 that it had built a decade earlier specifically to shore up its finances, yet the fair itself has continued nearly every year since its 1910 founding and remains financially fragile enough that the organization has recently sought county funding assistance

02

The mystery stays covered

Its historic Hippodrome building and PRCA rodeo programming give it a genuinely old-school agricultural-fair character, while dairy, beef, swine, and llama shows connect the modern event to its founding purpose as an Iowa State Dairy Association exhibition
