The story

Yarmouth Seaside Festival in Yarmouth

The Yarmouth Seaside Festival fills Columbus Day weekend with a craft fair of more than one hundred twenty-five vendors, kayak races, a pie-eating contest, bed races, a beach bonfire, fireworks, and a sand sculpture contest across South Yarmouth's Joshua Sears Memorial Field and nearby beaches. Founded in 1978 by resident Jan Butler, it remains a free, all-volunteer event.

Jan Butler, a South Yarmouth resident, founded the Yarmouth Seaside Festival in 1978 with a simple civic goal: creating community spirit and pride in the town of Yarmouth.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few Cape Cod festivals pack as many distinct traditions into one weekend: a craft fair, kayak and canoe races on the Bass River, a pie-eating contest, bed races, a beach bonfire, a fireworks display, and a themed sand sculpture contest all run across three days at different sites around town

02

The mystery stays covered

It has been organized entirely by volunteers since 1978, with founder Jan Butler's original goal, building community spirit and pride in Yarmouth, still visible in how thoroughly local businesses sponsor the event rather than outside corporate backers

03

The city starts moving

Spreading activities across Joshua Sears Memorial Field, Bass River Beach, Seagull Beach, and Smuggler's Beach also means the festival showcases several distinct parts of town rather than one central venue
