Carnaval de Melo in Melo
Carnaval de Melo is the annual carnival of Melo, capital of the Cerro Largo department in eastern Uruguay near the Brazilian border, where local social clubs such as the historic Centro Uruguay de Melo organize festivities and crown a carnival queen each season as part of the city's civic calendar.
Melo sits about 400 kilometers northeast of Montevideo as the capital of Cerro Largo, a cattle-ranching department that shares a long, largely open border with Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul.
