Desfile Inaugural de Carnaval in Montevideo
Desfile Inaugural de Carnaval opens Montevideo's Carnival season each January with a free evening parade down Avenida 18 de Julio. Murga choruses, comparsas, and the reigning Carnival royalty march the avenue in the first major public event of what Uruguayans market as the longest carnival in the world, a celebration that runs for more than forty days into March.
Every January, Avenida 18 de Julio, Montevideo's central artery, empties of cars and fills instead with drums, sequins, and satire.
