The story

Murga Joven in Montevideo

Murga Joven, formally the Encuentro de Murga Joven, is a Montevideo Intendencia program launched in 1998 that gives teenage and young adult performers a competitive platform to practice murga, Uruguay's sung and costumed Carnival theater, before some of them move on to the adult professional circuit. It runs each Carnival season in partnership with the Taller Uruguayo de Musica Popular.

In 1998, the Intendencia de Montevideo and the Taller Uruguayo de Musica Popular launched a program with a modest goal: give young people who loved murga, the sung, satirical, costumed choral theater at the center of Uruguayan Carnival, a real space to practice the craft.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Murga Joven began as an explicitly pedagogical and social project rather than a commercial event, designed to give young people interested in murga a structured space to learn the craft, and it has since become one of the clearest feeder systems into Uruguay's professional Carnival scene

02

The mystery stays covered

By 2025, roughly 40 percent of the groups competing in Montevideo's adult Carnival had come up through Murga Joven, a figure that reflects nearly three decades of consistent investment in youth training

03

The city starts moving

A dedicated research archive, the Archivo Murga Joven, launched in 2021 to document the program's history, underscoring how seriously it is treated as cultural policy rather than a side event
