Piriapolis de Pelicula in Piriapolis
Piriapolis de Pelicula is an annual international film festival held in the beach resort town of Piriapolis, Maldonado department, reaching its 22nd edition with tributes to Uruguayan and regional film actors. Held in late March, after the peak summer tourist season, it has positioned Piriapolis as a regional cinema hub distinct from Montevideo and Punta del Este's larger film events.
Piriapolis was built in the early twentieth century as a purpose-designed seaside resort, the vision of Uruguayan industrialist Francisco Piria, and for most of its history the town's cultural identity has centered on its beaches, its historic hotel, and its role as a more understated, family-oriented alternative to flashier Punta del Este.
