Yam Yanarawia Ceremony in Tanna
The Yam Yanarawia Ceremony marks the annual first yam harvest in southern Tanna, Vanuatu, with a rite honoring Majikjiki, the spirit believed to bless the harvest each year. It appears on the official Vanuatu Tourism Office calendar as a dated cultural event held around mid-May.
On the southern end of Tanna, in Vanuatu's Tafea province, the arrival of the season's first yams is not simply a harvest, it is an occasion for ceremony.
