Carnaval de Caracas in Caracas
Carnaval de Caracas is the capital's pre-Lenten carnival, a tradition dating to the Spanish colonial period that evolved from rough water-and-powder street games into refined eighteenth-century float parades, later became a mandatory public spectacle under dictator Juan Vicente Gomez, and has since been revived on a smaller scale after decades of decline.
Carnival arrived in Caracas with Spanish colonization, initially taking the form of rough street games played with water, blue dye, eggs and other substances thrown between participants rather than an organized parade.
