Festival de Gaitas de Caracas in Caracas
Each Christmas season, Caracas private schools compete in the Festival Intercolegial de Gaitas, a more than thirty-year-old tradition now involving around 27 institutions performing gaita, the percussion-driven musical genre that originated in Zulia state and reached Caracas in the 1960s, judged live before an audience.
Gaita, Venezuela's signature Christmas musical genre, was born in Zulia state in the early nineteenth century, closely tied to devotion to the Virgin of Chiquinquira and to the joyful mood of the holiday season, built around instruments including the cuatro, the furro, the charrasca, the tambora, and maracas.
