Velorio de la Cruz de Mayo Caracas in Caracas

The Velorio de la Cruz de Mayo is a May 3rd ritual celebrated across Caracas neighborhoods such as La Pastora, San Agustin, El Valle, 23 de Enero, and Petare, where devotees gather around a flower- and ribbon-decorated wooden cross to sing decimas and fulias. Rooted in more than 150 years of tradition, it was declared Cultural Heritage of Venezuela in 2014.

Every May 3rd, neighborhoods across Caracas fill with the sound of decimas and fulias as residents hold the Velorio de la Cruz de Mayo, a nightlong vigil built around a wooden cross decorated with flowers and colored ribbons.
