Carnaval de Carupano in Carupano
The Carnaval de Carupano is Sucre state's signature carnival, formally organised since 1964 in the coastal town of Carupano, featuring the Grito del Carnaval season opening, a Mini-Reina queen election, street parades and floats, and the folkloric character El Diablo Luis, drawing crowds estimated at 400,000 over its movable February-March dates.
Carnival in Carupano did not begin as an organised festival; it began, as in much of Venezuela, as scattered street water fights and neighbourhood parades that trace back to at least 1873, during the presidency of Antonio Guzman Blanco.
