Carnaval de Cumana in Cumana
Carnaval de Cumana is the pre-Lenten carnival of Cumana, capital of Sucre state on Venezuela's eastern Caribbean coast, marked by eastern Venezuelan musical traditions including cumanana drumming, golpe rhythms, and the burriquita folk dance performed by costumed comparsas.
Cumana, one of the oldest continuously inhabited Spanish-founded cities in South America, holds its carnival within the framework Venezuelans call carnestolendas, the fiestas de la carne observed nationwide in the movable weeks before the start of Cuaresma, Lent.
