Festival de Calypso de El Callao in El Callao
The Calypso de El Callao is a distinct Afro-Caribbean musical genre and performance tradition central to the annual Carnaval de El Callao in Bolivar state, brought by Trinidadian and other Caribbean migrants who arrived to work the region's gold mines in the nineteenth century, and inscribed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016.
El Callao sits in the goldfields of Bolivar state in southeastern Venezuela, a mining town whose population swelled in the nineteenth century as workers arrived from across the Caribbean, drawn by the promise of gold.
