The story

Fiesta de la Virgen del Valle in El Valle del Espiritu Santo

Each September 8, the town of El Valle del Espiritu Santo on Margarita Island becomes the center of eastern Venezuela's most important religious celebration, honoring the Virgen del Valle, patroness of the Venezuelan Navy and of Oriente, at the Minor Basilica built in her name.

El Valle del Espiritu Santo holds a special place in Margarita Island's history as the first social and administrative center established there, and its significance was cemented by the arrival of a Spanish image of the Virgin Mary that would go on to define the region's religious identity for centuries.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The Virgen del Valle's devotion traces back nearly five centuries, with tradition holding that a Spanish image of the Virgin survived a devastating 1542 hurricane on the nearby island of Cubagua before being brought to El Valle del Espiritu Santo, the first social and administrative center established on Margarita

02

The mystery stays covered

The celebration cycle is unusually structured across the calendar year, opening with the Bajada de la Virgen on September 1, when the image is solemnly lowered from its niche to be closer to worshippers, reaching its peak on September 8, and closing months later with the Subida de la Virgen on December 8, when the image is raised back to its upper altar, giving the devotion a sustained, multi-month rhythm rather than a single feast day
