Fiesta de Nuestra Senora de Coromoto in Guanare
Guanare, in Portuguesa state, is home to Venezuela's national Marian shrine, the Basilica of Our Lady of Coromoto, where pilgrims gather each September 11 to mark the anniversary of the Virgin's second apparition to an indigenous Coromoto chief in 1652, alongside a February 2 observance.
In the colonial year of 1651, according to Venezuelan Catholic tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to an indigenous chief in the Coromoto community of what is now Portuguesa state, speaking to him in his own language and urging him to seek baptism for himself and his family.
