The story

Carnaval de Maturin in Maturin

The Carnaval de Maturin is Monagas state's carnival, centred on a comparsa and float parade built by communities, schools and businesses along Avenida Raul Leoni, with a carnival queen election, musical shows, decorated-street competitions and, since 2024, a calypso-and-soca Jouvert, declared cultural heritage of Monagas state that same year.

Maturin's carnival has always been, at its core, a parade built by the city itself.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The 2024 introduction of a Jouvert, a water, foam and colour-based street celebration played to calypso and soca, marked a deliberate expansion of Maturin's carnival beyond its traditional float-parade format, borrowing an eastern Caribbean carnival practice not historically associated with this Monagas plains city, while the same year's official declaration of the carnival as state cultural heritage formally recognised a tradition already featuring, since at least 1976, a continuous line of crowned carnival queens
