The story

Locos y Locainas de Sanare in Sanare

Locos y Locainas is the general Venezuelan name for the Day of the Holy Innocents masquerade held every December 28 in towns across the Andes, Los Llanos, and Oriente regions, and in Sanare, Lara state, this same tradition is locally known and celebrated specifically as Los Zaragozas de Sanare.

Across a wide swath of Venezuela, from the Andes to the Llanos to the eastern Oriente region, December 28 is marked by a folk tradition remembering the biblical massacre of the innocents, the killing of young children in Bethlehem ordered by King Herod in an attempt to eliminate the infant Jesus.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This is one of Venezuela's most widespread folk-Catholic traditions, reenacting the biblical massacre of the innocents through costumed dancers wearing multicolored masks who represent the grief-stricken mothers of that story, but Sanare's version stands out for its unusually formal internal structure, with named roles including a capitana who safeguards the devotional painting, a capitan mayor who leads the dancers and musicians, and a capitan menor who manages fundraising, all performing to the specific rhythm of the Tamunangue, a musical and dance form closely identified with Lara state
