Giong Festival in Hanoi
Hanoi's Gióng Festival comprises distinct annual observances at Phù Đổng and Sóc temples honoring the legendary defender Saint Gióng. Phù Đổng stages a symbolic battle through a white horse, trained ritual officers, flag dance, drums and paper butterflies; Sóc features the bathing of the saint's statue and a procession of dyed bamboo flowers. UNESCO inscribed the paired tradition in 2010.
Paper butterflies released from a battle flag symbolically scatter Saint Gióng's enemies at the Phù Đổng form of Hanoi's Gióng Festival.
