The story

Hue Festival in Hue

Festival Hue is a biennial international arts festival held in Vietnam's former imperial capital during even-numbered years, first staged as a Vietnam-France cultural exchange in 1992 and renamed Festival Hue in 2000. It gathers Vietnamese and international performing arts troupes for weeks of programming across the city's heritage sites.

Hue spent more than a century as the seat of Vietnam's last ruling dynasty, the Nguyen, and much of what defines the city today, its citadel, its royal tombs, its formal court ceremonies, survives as heritage rather than living governance.

Festival Hue distinguishes itself by recreating specific imperial-era ceremonies rather than staging generic performances: programs have included Dem Hoang Cung, a Royal Night recreation, the Nam Giao offering ceremony once performed by Nguyen emperors, and Truyen Lo and Vinh Qui Bai To, rites honoring imperial examination graduates returning home, alongside a re-enactment of Nguyen Hue's enthronement as Emperor Quang Trung and a revived Doctor of Martial Arts examination festival staged partly at the historic Ho Quyen tiger arena

02

The mystery stays covered

The 2006 edition brought together 22 Vietnamese art troupes with 1,171 performers and 22 international groups with 269 foreign artists for 138 performances across more than 40 venues, drawing 1
