The story

Ponagar Tower Festival in Nha Trang

The Thap Ba Ponagar Festival is held each year on the twentieth to twenty-third days of the third lunar month at the Cham-built Ponagar Towers overlooking Nha Trang, honoring the goddess Po Nagar, revered by both Cham and Vietnamese communities as a mother deity of the land.

On a hill overlooking the mouth of the Cai River in Nha Trang, the Ponagar Towers have stood since Cham builders raised them across several centuries, roughly the eighth to the thirteenth, dedicating the site to a goddess known to Cham communities as the mother of the land.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few festival sites in Vietnam are shared as directly between two distinct religious traditions as Ponagar: Cham communities, many practicing Ahier belief with Hindu-influenced roots, and Vietnamese Kinh communities, who know the same goddess as Thien Y A Na, both make pilgrimage here, giving the festival's rites, including the ceremonial bathing and re-robing of the goddess statue, a genuinely blended religious character

02

The mystery stays covered

The event is layered with classical hat boi opera performances and dragon-lion dances, and its recognition as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2012 formally acknowledged that dual Cham-Kinh significance
