The story

Lusaka International Film and Music Festival in Lusaka

The Lusaka International Film and Music Festival, founded by Charity Maruta, is an annual cinema and music showcase historically screened at Fresh View Cinemas in Lusaka. Its 2016 fifth edition partnered with the Chinese Embassy to screen Zhang Yimou's House of Flying Daggers, Dragon Blade and Farewell My Concubine alongside Zambian programming.

Charity Maruta founded the Lusaka International Film and Music Festival with a specific ambition: to bring foreign films to Zambian audiences and, through that exposure, help local viewers better understand and interact with the wider world while inspiring new themes and perspectives among Zambian filmmakers and other creative industry professionals.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival has functioned as a genuine cultural-diplomacy platform, not just a screening series: its opening nights have drawn ambassadors and senior Zambian government ministers, and the 2016 edition's partnership with the Chinese Embassy filled the cinema for a programme of Chinese films selected specifically for the Zambian audience by the embassy itself

02

The mystery stays covered

Founder Charity Maruta has described the festival's purpose explicitly as introducing foreign films to Zambian audiences to widen perspectives and inspire new creative directions for local filmmakers, giving the event a stated educational mission alongside its entertainment programme
