Gonde Lwiindi in Monze

Lwiindi Gonde is the annual thanksgiving and rain ceremony of the Tonga people of Chief Monze's chiefdom, held each July at the Gonde shrine south of Monze town in Zambia's Southern Province. Chief Monze presides over the rites, giving thanks for the past harvest and asking the ancestors for good rains ahead.

For the Tonga people who farm and herd cattle across the plateau of Zambia's Southern Province, rain has never been guaranteed, and the region's history includes long stretches of drought that shaped how communities relate to the land and to their ancestors.
