Zimbabwe International Book Fair in Harare

The Zimbabwe International Book Fair began in Harare in 1983, founded by David Martin, Phyllis Johnson and Charles Mungoshi. For years it ranked among Africa's most important book fairs, bringing publishers, writers, poets and translators together, before the 2006 launch of the Cape Town Book Fair gave the region a rival event.

The Zimbabwe International Book Fair opened in Harare in 1983, three years after independence, founded by David Martin, Phyllis Johnson and the novelist Charles Mungoshi at a moment when Zimbabwe's literary and publishing scene was still finding its post-colonial footing.
