Kukes Mountain Festival in Kukes
Festa e Gjallicës, named for the mountain overlooking Kukës, falls each year on the Thursday closest to August 6th, centred on the village of Shtiqën in the Lumë Plain. A newer offshoot, the Gjallica International Festival, has expanded the tradition into a multi-day summer programme. Both sit within Kukës's wider calendar of pastoral traditions like the Dunmet cattle-return festival and the Tërthore sheep-shearing celebration.
Festa e Gjallicës takes its name from Mount Gjallica, the peak that dominates the skyline above Kukës in Albania's mountainous northeast near the Kosovo border, and it falls each year on the Thursday closest to August 6th, a date that traditionally marks the midpoint of summer in the region's popular calendar.
